CHAPTER [3] PROTEINS
Proteins
(3/26/2016)
Amino Acid Composition of Proteins:
It is amazing that all the different types of proteins are initially synthesized as polymers of only 20 amino acids, known as the common amino acids, the common amino acids are defined as those amino acids for which a specific codon exists in the DNA genetic code, there are 20 amino acids for which DNA codon are known, the process of the reading of the DNA code, resulting in the polymerization of amino acids of a specific sequence into the proteins based on the DNA code, In this chapter we shall discus only the protein of this genetically controlled synthetic process,
For example

There are 20 amino acids for which mRNA codon are known, the process of the reading of the mRNA code, resulting in the polymerization of amino acids of a specific sequence into the proteins based on the mRNA code,
The genetically controlled synthetic process =

= (Methionine + 18.5 + NH3 + COO- + CH1)
= (Glycine + H5)
Main Functions of Cysteine:
Cysteine and Cystine are interconvertible.
Two molecules of Cysteine make Cystine = (2-Sulfur + NH2 + COO H2)
Antioxidant.
Protective against radiation, pollution, ultra-violet light and other causes of increased free radical production.
Natural detoxifier,
Essential in growth, maintenance, and repair of skin,
Key ingredient in hair.
One of the 3 main sulfur-containing amino acids = (2-Sulfur + NH2 + COO H2)
along with Taurine and Methionine = (Methionine + 18.5 + NH3 + COO- + CH1)
Important constituent of Glutathione,
an important tripeptide made up of Cystine, Glutamic Acid, and Glycine = (Glycine + H5)
Precursor to the amino acid Taurine,
Precursor to Chondroitin Sulfate, the main component of cartilage = (2-Sulfur + NH2 + COO H2)
