CHAPTER [3] PROTEINS

Proteins

(4/12/2016)

Amino Acid Composition of Proteins:

It is amazing that all the different types of proteins are initially synthesized as polymers of only 20 amino acids, known as the common amino acids, the common amino acids are defined as those amino acids for which a specific codon exists in the DNA genetic code, there are 20 amino acids for which DNA codon are known, the process of the reading of the DNA code, resulting in the polymerization of amino acids of a specific sequence into the proteins based on the DNA code, In this chapter we shall discus only the protein of this genetically controlled synthetic process,

For example

Threonine = C4H9NO3 = 121.25 m/g

Threonine = ACU, ACC, ACA, ACG, = mRNA Codons

Total Codons = G1 + C5 + U1 + A5 + = 12

Threonine = ACU, ACC, ACA, ACG, = mRNA Codons

There are 20 amino acids for which mRNA codon are known, the process of the reading of the mRNA code, resulting in the polymerization of amino acids of a specific sequence into the proteins based on the mRNA code,

The genetically controlled synthetic process =

= (3Glycine + H2O + H = 247.25)

= (H2O + NH2 + CH = 48.25)

= (1CH2OH + OH = 49)

= (Vitomin-B6, C6H6 + 2CH2OH + OH + H3C + N = 190 and COOH + H7 = 54)

Main Functions of Threonine

Required for formation of collagen, (1CH2OH + OH = 49)

Helps prevent fatty deposits in the liver, (1CH2OH + OH = 49)

Aids in production of antibodies,

Can be converted to Glycine (a neurotransmitter) in the central nervous system, (3Glycine + H2O + H = 247.25)

Acts as detoxifier,

Needed by the GI (gastrointensinal) tract for normal functioning, (Vitomin-B6, C6H6 + 2CH2OH + OH + H3C + N = 190 and COOH + H7 = 54)

Provides symptomatic re-life in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's Disease).

In laboratory experiments with animals, Threonine increases thymus weight.

Threonine is often low in depressed patients, (H2O + NH2 + CH = 48.25)

In that group of patients, Threonine is helpful in treating the depression, (H2O + NH2 + CH = 48.25)
