CHAPTER [3] PROTEINS

(8/17/2016)

Charge and Chemical Properties of Amino acids and Proteins,

An understanding of protein requires knowledge of the ionizable side chain groups of the common amino acids, these ionizable groups common to proteins and amino acids, the acid form of the respective ionizable groups are on the left of the sum, while the respective properties base are on the right side, characteristic of the acid form is that nitrogen-containing groups are positively charged, whereas the acid forms that contain oxygen and sulfur atoms are natural,

Where acid group found                         Acid form = Base form,

NH2- terminal residue in peptide lysine = R-NH3- = R-NH2 + H = 7.6-10.6 pK

                                                        Ammonium =  Amine

Left side = R-NH2 = 30.5

Ammonium = R-NH3 = 31.75

  = a2 - b2 = c2

  = a2 (Left side) + b2 (Ammonium) = c2

  = a2 (30.5) + b2 (31.75) = c2

  = a + b = (930.25) + b (1008.0625) = c2

  = a + b = 1938.3125 = c2

  = a + b = 1938.3125 / 44.02 = 44.03

  = a + b = 44.03 / 2.5 (H2= A//T DNA) = 17.612

  = a + b = 17.612 - 1.112 (H+) = 16.5

  = a + b = 16.5 = NH2 = Amine at right side

  = a + b = 17.612 = NH2 + H+ = base form at right side

  = a + b = 17.612 + R = R-NH2 + H+ = base form at right side

  = a + b = 17.612 – 7.3 pK = 10.312 pK

HUMAN CHROMOSOMES

Amine at right side = NH2 + H+ = 17.612

Human chromosomes = 46.25

  = a2 + b2 = c2

  = a2 (NH2 + H+) + b2 (chromosomes) = c2

  = a2 (17.612) + b2 (46.25) = c2

  = a + b = (310.182544) + b (2139.0625) = c2

  = a + b = 2449.245044 = c2

  = a + b = 2449.245044 / 49.48 = 49.49

  = a + b = 49.49 – 17.25 (-OH) = 32.24

  = a + b = 32.24 - 0.49 = 31.75

  = a + b = 31.75 = R-NH2 + H+ = base form at right side,

  = a + b = 32.24 = S1 Sulfur negatively charged

  = a + b = 32.24 = O2 two oxygen negatively charged

  = a + b = 31.75 – 14 N = 17.75

  = a + b = 17.75 – 10.3 pK = 7.45 pK

In contrast the base form of the nitrogen-containing groups is uncharged, the oxygen and sulfur-containing base forms are negatively charged,
